Isla Colon

Isla Colon is the largest and most populated island in the Bocas del Toro archipelago, with a human popula-
tion of about 3,500; the majority of which live in the main town located on southeast side of the island. A rapid
increase of pastureland has resulted in fragmented forests throughout the island.
Colon is the only island with a road from north to south, so it was explored by quad (ATV). Unfortunately the island is largely deforested but larger primary forest
patches remain. The interior of the island is quite hilly but could be easily reached by the main road. Smaller trails lead deeper into the forest where almost immediately the call of Oophaga pumilio could be heard
in the undergrowth. It did not take long to locate the first calling male frogs on the lower tree trunks, trying to attract a mate or defending their small territories.
These tiny but brightly coloured frogs where extremely abundant in the explored localities. Most frogs were found on exposed roots, philodendron leaves, tree trunks and bromeliads up to 1 meter above the ground. The frogs are rarely found in leaf litter, and often prefer traveling on fallen branches or roots across the ground. The morph of the strawberry dart frog on Isla Colon is yellowish green with brown markings and dots. While the team photographed and filmed the frogs near the forest floor, they were observed by a curious sloth that moved slowly but surely through the lower canopy of the dense forest.
Due to the short stay on Colon and the extreme rains, not many other species of amphibians and reptiles were observed. After exploring the forests of Colon, the team boarded the research vessel in the small port of Bocas located on the southern tip of the island.
